Primary Care Trust Postcard Campaign
Although Independent Midwives have chosen to work outside of the NHS there is currently a National Government Supported Campaign to make independent midwifery FREE to all women.

We just need to demonstrate a need in your area. So if you would like to be able to choose your midwife, get to know and trust her, have plenty of time during appointments and know she will be with you when you give birth in the place of your choice please click here.

Fill in the online form with your name and address, we will then send a postcard on your behalf to your local PCT.

We have a Campaign Action Sheet you can download and are invited to print and distribute.

Our campaign is now on the Voice Your Views website - it will enable an email to be sent to your MP, outlining our plight and stressing the need for PCTs to be able to use the services of independent midwives. People can easily customise the text to include their own comments.

PROPOSED MANDATORY PROFESSIONAL INDEMNITY INSURANCE (PII) FOR HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS – EFFECT ON INDEPENDENT MIDWIVES:

  • The Independent Midwives Association was founded in 1985 to disseminate information about, and support for, independent midwives, and to lobby for the traditional role of the midwife.
  • Independent Midwives have been unable to obtain insurance on the open market, but are experiencing increasing demand for their services from women who are looking for a greater level of support than the NHS can always offer.
  • Legislation requiring PII must make allowances for those health professionals who cannot obtain insurance on a commercial basis.
  • The Independent Midwives Association is at the forefront of trying to find a solution that meets the Government’s policy requirements while also protecting the ability of its members to practice outside of the NHS.

Government lobbying progress:

John Baron MP submitted an Early Day Motion supporting our case on 29th March 2007, which has been signed by 126 MPs.

Our Downing Street petition which closed with 9,204 signatures received a response which was essentially a restatement of the policies that gave rise to the need for the petition in the first place! The Government seems to treat petitions as requests for information, rather than action.
