I fully support the campaign to help independent midwives to be able to contract their services in to the NHS & make their extraordinary homebirthing skills available to all. This gold standard of care can such be made available to all expectant mothers. I had a lot of help from an independent midwife via telephone support, who over time helped to increase my confidence in opting to deliver my twin girls naturally, even though one was breech. I went to 42 weeks too! They were both nearly 8lbs each and it was a wonderful experience! (Mother of 4/1 born at home) |

Hi. I am a midwife currently living in Australia, working in the hospital system. Previously I was in New Zealand - in various settings including case loading. I came across your site via a link at the "Business of being born" site. (Recently went to a public viewing). I'm interested to see what is happening in the UK - politically etc with midwifery. I have just read the article regarding the IMA and the NCT voicing concerns over the ACOG decision and views about homebirths and their safety in the USA. As much as I agree with all that was written and voiced, I do believe that a step forward in the USA would be to train midwives and let midwives be the lead role in normal birth, wherever the woman chooses to deliver her baby, be that in a hospital or at home. The problem with the American system is not the fact that they have laws restricting homebirth but that they have done away with the role of the midwife. We need to fight for the rebirth of the midwife!!! (Midwife) |

| | | | I have just read the article in The Times (8.5.08) and felt I wanted to add my support to the campaign. I have two adult children. One was born in hospital (Bedford) with a young midwife I had not met before. I was very fortunate that my daughter was born in under two hours from start to finish but there were aspects of that birth that I still find concerning. The midwife was young, had not had children of her own and was slightly irritated with me when I was admitted until she realised I was 7 cm dilated. I heard her whisper to a student midwife that she would perform an episiotomy to "show him how it was done". The subsequent stitching and stay in hospital was not pleasant and the worst aspect of the whole thing. My second baby was born using the GP Unit system then operational in Bedford which was fantastic. I got to know the midwife and she me, she was very sympathetic and calm. My son was born three weeks early (also in under two hours) and I was only in hospital for six hours. I tore naturally, was stitched by my GP beautifully and suffered no pain at all from that as opposed to the episiotomy which was awful. I wish I had had the confidence then to request a home birth. I am the youngest of four all of whom were born at home. My mother was 44 when she gave birth to me - her quickest and easiest birth but that was in 1952. My father was her midwife! I do appreciate that I was extremely lucky. I would like to see women having real choices, knowing the person who will help them with this important life process. I also did NCT classes. One of the nurses in hospital when I had my first child tried to "help" me breastfeed - jamming my daughter's head on to me. It was a NCT breastfeeding councilor who really helped me when I was at home and much more relaxed. I went on to feed her and my son for a year. I despair that so few babies these days are being fed by their mothers - what they are missing! This "Health & Safety" insurance situation has got totally out of hand in I feel. When do we all take responsibility for ourselves? Good luck with the campaign. (older mother who cares about future mothers) | |

I have had Four home births with independent midwives and they have been the very best experiences of my life bar none. This should be available to ALL women. When are the government going to wake up and realise that this is the way forward - they would save money a hundred times over. (VERY satisfied customer) |

In June 2007 I had a natural, drug free homebirth with a local independent midwife and think that this choice should be open to all women. I am also a co-ordinator for Newbury Homebirth group and am passionate about natural childbirth. (homebirthing mother) |
